Embodying Tikkun Olam; Compassion, Belonging, and restoring Humanity

“To my mind, it is a microcosm of how a good world might operate”

“The Drop-In is full of life—it is great fun, with mutual respect, kindness, and generosity of spirit amongst both the guests and the volunteers. All are thankful to receive and give generously. It’s a place where everyone, no matter their background, comes together in an atmosphere of warmth and inclusion. To my mind, it is a microcosm of how a good world might operate. At this particular time, with world politics, it is easy to feel overwhelmed—an afternoon at the LJS Drop-In certainly puts a smile on my face!” – LJS Member and Volunteer of 2 years

“The earth does not repair itself. It takes good people to make the change they want to see, and we prove that is possible, to ourselves and others, every time we volunteer.”

“Volunteering has been one of the best things that’s ever happened to me. It’s rekindled my faith in humanity and introduced me to a whole network of like-minded people who have become close friends. In a time when the news is filled with hardship and division, this experience reminds me that kindness and community still exist. The part of my job I enjoy most is seeing our guests after they’ve found something they really like—whether it’s a warm coat or just a needed item of clothing. They excitedly show their friends while they all sit down and eat together.

It’s a moving scene that shows how much the work we do really means. It’s not just about providing essentials; it’s about dignity, joy, and the feeling of being seen.” – Volunteer of 7 years

“I feel enriched after a session—a great sense of companionship, all working together. Whether serving food, helping with clothing, or simply being present, every volunteer plays a meaningful role in creating a welcoming environment.”

Although I will never know much about those stories, it is wonderful to see a smile emerge when they hear the words ‘you are welcome.’ “The Drop-In offers a wonderful opportunity to extend warmth and welcome to people who have arrived in London in circumstances very different from those which brought me here. Every guest has a story—one of resilience, hardship, and hope. Although I will never know much about those stories, it is wonderful to see a smile emerge when they hear the words ‘you are welcome.’ In that moment, you can feel the weight of their journey ease, even just a little.

I always leave the Drop-In humbled by the graciousness of the guests and their children. Witnessing their warmth, despite the challenges they face, is a powerful reminder of human resilience. On a personal level, volunteering once a month at the Drop-In has given structure and purpose back to my life after a bereavement, and I am truly grateful to be part of this team. -LJS Member and volunteer of one year.
