Iftar Event at Muslim World League London Office

At The LJS Inter-Faith pre-Channukah Service last December, I met Fauzia from the Muslim World League – London Office, and invited her to visit our drop-in this January. After her visit, she wrote me to say she was inspired by the collective commitment the volunteers showed toward our guests and how organised we were as a project. From this, she was inspired to host an Iftar for Asylum Seekers at the MWLLO on Goodge Street. The MWLLO graciously extended the invitation to all of our guests and some volunteers.

The Iftar was a beautiful event, despite many of our guests being unable to attend, and an opportunity to learn about Ramadan and share a meal with community partners and other organisations working with Asylum Seekers. MWLLO is based in Camden Council, which was titled ‘Borough of Sanctuary’ due to its commitment to welcoming refugees and asylum seekers. They “we work with a range of strategic and local partners and with our local communities to deliver places of sanctuary and a culture of welcome, dignity and inclusion for those fleeing war, persecution or human rights abuse.”

MWLLO made a very generous donation to The LJS Drop-in following this Iftar event, demonstrating their solidarity and support of our project. We are delighted and honored by this new partnership. We are discussing planning a joint event next Ramadan, or sooner for our asylum seeker guests and those residing in the Camden borough in which the MWLLO is based.
